Protocol (recipe) for extracting DNA from fruits/vegetables
Chill the alcohol in refrigerator for a few minutes before using. Cold alcohol will draw more DNA.
1. Mash 3 strawberries in a ziploc sandwich bag (Mechanically breaks up cells)
2. Add 1/2 cup of water (Provides a solvent to disperse the cell parts)
3. Add 2 teaspoons of liquid detergent (Detergent sends broken cell walls into solution)
4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt (Causes DNA to clump together)
5. Squeeze out air, reseal and mash some more(Mixes the ingredients together)
6. Pour through coffee filter into a glass (Removes the big chunks from the stuff that is dissolved)
7. Slowly add about 1/2 glass of cool ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. Vodka works too. (Precipitates DNA)
8. Wait for the DNA to precipitate into a white milky precipitate and draw it out with a stick
